Yep, we got cats.

Make sure you see the end of this post – for the contest part. With prizes!

It’s been a good long while since the evil Desdemona passed on, long enough that Sage never met her. The closest she came to her own cats were the two kitties who did me the honor of inflicting me with toxoplasmosis while I was pregnant and thus were summarily returned to the pushy vet.

(Wow, death, evil, feline abandonment and disfiguring prenatal diseases all in one opening paragraph. There’s some holiday cheer for you!)

In any case, Nate’s constant whining finally wore me down. And seeing these sweet little 7 month-old rescue kitties in the window playing gently with my kids, while Thalia bent down and whispered to one, I’m Thalia. I’m your friend, don’t be afraid. I will take great care of you–well that pretty much shrunk my heart three sizes last night.

(Quick PSA: Adopt a Cat through Animal Haven – they rock.)

But now the one thing we’re missing–besides a scratching post and a life’s supply of those lint roller thingies–are names.

Well, we do have a few options per Thalia:

Cookie and Train
Grey One and Other Grey One
Dippy and Flippy
Tan and Ban
Cat and Cat
Drinks Water Cat and Don’t Drinks Water Cat [sic]

In other words, we need your help. I mean, if you think you’re better than a 3 year-old at naming animals and all.

They’re both girls, one is grey tiger stripes and the other is browner stripes with a little orange around the neck.

If you name our kitties or inspire the names you will win a Look What is Unopened in My Closet package including a Fisher Space Pen (WRITES EVEN UPSIDE DOWN!), an autographed copy of Sleep is for the Weak, a bottle of M Mariah Carey’s Luscious Pink Eau de Parfum Spray, and something out of the kids’ stockings which may or may not have been in their mouths.

Photos of the kitties to come when they come out from under the couch.

Thalia wears her cat dress and cat ears and tail today so the kitties “know we are friendly.”

  1. I too just recently aggreed to take in a stray cat. We named him “Dar” from one of my Dad’s favorite movies, “BeastMaster”.How about: “Peek” and “Boo” or “Kiwi” and “Sushi” for your two.

  2. thordora’s comment inspires “Betty and Veronica” – from the Archie comics… no? OK, from my tweet to you: Emanon (no name backwards), Emmy for short… Our gray tiger striped (tabby) cat became (of course!) Tiger, Tiggy for short; our black cat is Coco (mostly for former Red Soxer Coco Crisp, but also could be Coco Chanel… )That’s it. That’s what I have for you. No, wait – how about Eartha Kitt??! (We had a big-pawed kitten called Count Basie, lived to age 19!)

  3. Well, the dogs name is Emily, so how about Lexi and Jessi.Actually, I really like cookie and train.

  4. i like cookie and train, too.but how abouthmmm…..roxy and shadow?don’t ask me why.first thing that popped into my head.

  5. sister and my cousin are newly pregnant so this holiday a bunch of names were tossed around by the crowd but mostly my suggestions were mocked and scoffed at. Possibly they are better suited for kitty names.-Sugar (or Suga if you're really hip) and HazelGood luck & Happy New Year 🙂

  6. Frederika von Kitty Kat (Fred for short) and The Baroness Kitty Kitty Meow Meow (Kitty for short). I think that the pompousness of the feline is complimented by a ridiculously snooty name and a common nick name, but that’s just me.

  7. years ago we had three stray kittens running around our neighborhood. Our son who was about 3 at the time named them Bingo, Tarzan and Pantyhose. Eventually, we ended up catching one of them who has since become our pet. Luckily it turned out to be Bingo. So those other two names are still up for grabs- feel free to go with Tarzan and Pantyhose!

  8. …naming? Agh, goodness. The last time a relative asked me to name a baby I said Arviragus, and so people mostly don’t ask me anymore. 😀 Ha. Cordelia and Ophelia? Emmeline and Adeline? Perdita and Portia? Viola and Valentine?Yep, I’ve been reading lots of Shakespeare lately, hence the ridiculous names. Ha.How about something simple? Like Mouse?Good luck on the quest!

  9. Okay, here goes: “Tickala” and “Necklace”, which were my son’s first and middle names while he was “in utero”.My son (20 months) suggests “Thomas” and “Rocket” which come from his favorite (read “obsessive”)TV shows. I know, I’m a bad mom – he gets to watch TV upon occasion.

  10. Okay, I’m back, with more oddness. Salt and Pepper? Or in a different language?! Kulfi and Shakkara? That’s “ice cream” and “sugar”. Kafka and Milena? You know, after Franz Kafka and Milena Jesenská. Ha, I know, ridiculous, but ridiculous names are fun.

  11. These are all so great, thank you! Keep them coming!Nate’s now leaning towards “Serrano” for one of them. As in ham. Which I hate. (The ham, not so much the name.)But that tells you where his head is at.

  12. i like “cookie” and “train” also…but if that’s not an option…George Michael and Maybe (from Arrested Development)orSearch and DestroyorSnack and Scratch (suggestions from a 5 yr old)

  13. I’ve got it! Max (totally can be a girl’s name) and Ruby! I might be watching a bit too much Nick Jr. 😛

  14. Nicki and Nora. Thelma and Louise?I kind of do like Serrano (the name, also not the ham), but that doesn’t make any other complementary name magically appear in my brain. Unless maybe Pepper for the grey?

  15. Oh maybe I should have pointed out – the names don’t have to go together. In fact, maybe better if they didn’t?

  16. Venus and Serena?Joely and Natasha?Eva and Zsa Zsa?(Dude, I’m allergic to cats. I don’t know.)

  17. Pumpkin and Brownie (uninspired, but on the kid’s level perhaps)Henry and Clare (from my favorite book, The Time Traveler’s Wife)Pookie and FinkyWow, I’m just pulling them out of my as* now because I want the book!

  18. Suggestion from the 4 year old:Tigger and WallyFrom me:I can only think of names that go together.Edward and BellaUmmm, how about Sprinkles and Gracie or Joey and Baby?I’m not a good animal namer.:)

  19. Ok the ham inspired my yiddishkeit – what about Glatt and/or Trayfe? I also like Shiksa but some might find that insulting. I find it funny but my sense of humor is…unique.

  20. Darth Maul and Darth Sidious 🙂 For all cats are wise in the ways of the force and they don’t use their powers for good. I love cats, but cats are Freakin EVIL 🙂

  21. I’m kind of partial to the grey and water options on your list. Or maybe “Tool” and “Die” or “Offset” and “Self0inking” or “Skip” and “Jump” or “Hex” and ‘Wrench” (since that is the only tool anyone needs anymore).Or not.

  22. My son, D, votes for “#8” and “#8 green”Jilly votes for “Cally” and “Zack” (if that sounds familiar, they are the names of my cats)Belly votes for “Pounce” and “Mickey”Ahhhh, I now see why you don't ask the kids. I love the whole Greek/Roman goddess angle, so maybe Hera & Juno (protector of marriage), Selene & Luna (goddess of the moon) or, more aptly, Eris and Discordia, the Goddess of Discord.

  23. Hey, we had a cat named Desdemona too! At the time, we actually had three cats: Desdemona, Capulet and Montague.Er, Shakespeare anyone?Anyway, each of those cats has come and gone and now our girl cats are: Anastacia, Fiona, Ramona, and Hambre. (I know we’re totally the crazy cat people, but in my defense, only Anastacia is an indoor cat, the rest adopted us).Hambre is Spanish for hunger. And that cat, well, she’s a porker.Good luck! I like the name Roxy, so I think whoever suggested that is destined for great things =)

  24. I think cookie and train are awesome names. MUCH better than Track and Tripp, anyway. But I’ll aways be partial to the word verification names …mithromchrocdizesdifiesspleacatiefaliscul

  25. Oh, also, and this has nothing to do with naming your cat REALLY, but I thought you might appreciate it. My sister-in-law has a cat named Chairman Meow.Heh.

  26. I like cookie and train too, but if you’re not sold on those here’s what we did. We have one black and white cat named “Nico” and one all white cat with one blue eye and one gold-ish eye named “Blue”. You could name the kitty with the bit of orange “Orange” or “Naranja” (because that’s a fun way to say orange)and the other something cutesy. You can use “Nico” if you agree that it’s cute!

  27. I was thinking Serrano and Chorizo…but with one being grey, maybe Toledo?it works for the stone city and famed metallurgy?if not maybe pimenton?jamon?iberico?I kind of like serrano and toledo…

  28. I know you said they didn’t have to go together…but if you decide to go crazy and collect cats it is easier on you if their names match. Then you use them interchangeably when you yell at them to stop clawing at the furniture. We have a Jackie and a Jester. And a Charlie and a Chester.Hint: Children can make even the most innocent sounding name resemble something my mother would put soap in my mouth for. Keep it in mind in case Thalia wants to tell everyone at school about the new cats. (Or just share the story afterwards.)

  29. books & lettersdo and don'tstop & gothessaly and gogotrain & carsimba and coorun & walkstop & gogoham & cheesefood & waterSORRY LIZdora & diegofoofa & the one Sage likesartist & musicianrock and rollok I'll stop now

  30. Ok, I see, Nate wants more personal names. How about Dukkah and Skins. Or Hailie (Hail to the Redskins song) and Taylor (RIP #21).

  31. How about Sylvester and Tweety! I couldn’t resist. We also adopted two cats because of my daughter. It’s all her fault. Their names are Rhett and Roxie. Good luck!

  32. How about naming them after neighborhoods in NYC?Astoria and Nolita?Chelsea and Dumbo?Soho and Tribeca?Or any combination thereof.

  33. Pease and PorridgeKatherine and BiancaBeezus and RamonaFish and ChipJane and CassandraAntigone and IsmeneLeah and RachelDorian (Gray) and Agnes (Grey)

  34. When we got our dog I wanted to name him Bobbaluna (Luna for short)or Swan or Charlie. I got stuck with a Maxwell. I also like Cooper. But I was thinking a little girl would love the name Bobbaluna or Swan for her kitties! Good luck!

  35. Our cat Church recently was hit and killed, so I nominate him for a namesake. *grin* We thought he was a girl, so we named him Gracie, but after a few weeks we realized he was a boy and had to change the name. We had a hard time picking a boy name…and then I thought of “Pet Semetary” so we named him Church after THAT cat. (I am not a dumbass-I think the title is actually misspelled. Actually, I *may* be a dumbass, but the title is still misspelled purposely.) It was funny and kind of irreverent and some people got the reference and laughed, and others just thought we were really religious, when we really aren’t, lol.Over the weekend a female stray started hanging around, so we seem to have adopted it and we are calling her Gracie now.I knew twins named Brandy and Sherry in jr high; I always thought that was funny for people, but would be cute for animals.Anyway, good luck in your quest for the perfect names. I know it is (almost) as hard as picking baby names!

  36. Why on Earth didn’t you choose Dippy and Flippy. My dog’s name is Zippy, so I’m allllll about Dippy and Flippy.

  37. I am a big fan of the Grey one and the other Grey one. That's just awesome. But for a contest, I'll submit a few:Chloe & MiaMerlot & Tipsy (I'm not drunk I swear.)Mayhem & TroubleYou could also do what my dad does, give them all initials. DC – for dam cat, RC for rat catcher and ID for Idiot. My dad; he's not so fond of the kittehs.

  38. – Pancake and Waffle– Pablo and Uniqua– Bama and Biddie (for Obama & Biden since I know you're a democrat)– Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker (my boys love Star Wars)Have fun naming them!

  39. i will offer up fluffer and bunny. these are actually the names my sister and i use for each other, interchangeably. i think it started with that commercial with the dude who was on his cell phone with some automated service, you know, riding the subway and randomly yelling out (when they asked his pet’s name): “FLUFFY!”but, after all that, i still think ‘gray one’ and ‘other gray one’ is best.

  40. While i don’t have any names to throw out there, one thing to keep in mind – animals tend to respond to the number of syllables in their names. So to differentiate, you may want to go with a one syllable name and a two syllable name. (or two and three, or one and three, ha, I bet you get my point by now.) Just a thought. Maybe Sophie and Claire. Or Cookie and Train…

  41. Ernie and BertPogi and Bubba(Pogi is tagalog/filipino for cute or handsome)Kitty and Grey

  42. It’s Jennifer from Animal Haven – thanks for posting about us…Reading what Thalia said to the kitties made me cry! Love Thalia’s outfit…You have sweet kids and so happy we placed two of kitties with your family!!jennifer and all the staff at Animal Haven

  43. Cora and CallieJocasta and CalpurniaSturm und DrangSerrano and ParmaAlexa and AveryMuse and Fury

  44. Well… I’ve pretty much decided on “chorizo” or “pimenton” for the dark one because of the dark burnt orange color in her fur…so who ever guessed “chorizo and the grey one” will probably win…nateprops to whom ever said “monk or gibbs” though… if they were in the play-offs there’d for sure be a “sellers” or “taylor”…and it’s hard to not love “#8” and “#8 green” they win my contest…

  45. Two female cats. Female cats that will grow old together must have names they can grow old together with.My pick is Alice and Matilda.Of course Elenore (my daughter’s name) is always a good choice. While were talking about names, I’m pregnant again and in the market for names.Any suggestions?

  46. Gin and Tonic?Probably not good for a three year old to run around saying “Gin? Where are you Gin? Has anyone seen my Gin?” Okay scratch that last one.How about Nugent for one (As in Ted, and the whole Cat Scratch Fever thing. But he is an ultra-conservative, Bambi killer so yeah, let’s throw that one out too) and Bacon for the other. Because everything goes better w/ bacon.Ooh, how about Bacon and Bits? I know you said they didn’t need to go together but c’mon…

  47. Chicken and Hothead!(But you’ll only catch the reference if you’ve heard of < HREF="" REL="nofollow">Hothead Paisan<>Or Chicken and Parmesan.Cat I and Cat II.

  48. Thanks for the PSA. I love the name cookies but if you want something other than their shelter names:Nona or Nono and Boo or BoobooIt’s really fun to hear little kids say and your youngest could feel good about being able to pronounce their names! =bailey the shelter manager

  49. i always liked oscar for a cat. could work for a female, too. oscar and emmy? oscar and chorizo? emmy and chorizo?

  50. We have a new kitten, too. My advice. Spay them BEFORE they go into heat. Really. Onto names:Salt and PepperArugula and EndiveCupcake and CookieUz and Buz (biblical reference)Mopsy and FlopsyMaisy and DaisyGoogle and YahooTwitter and BlogFail and WhaleSunny and Shareand I have to admit a certain fondness for Thelma and Louise although that could encourage escapee cats.

  51. Nate, I love you dearly, but our cat is not going to be named Chorizo. Thalia can hardly say “Thalia.”

  52. well, something fun for you and for your girl is ideal. Like, olive and cherry. 2 items in a good drink, fun foods for T.But, when it has come to naming animals in my home, i name them names my husband would never let me name a child but that i love. that is how we ended up with Oliver and Fiona.

  53. just for those keeping score at home, Thalia said “chorizo” perfectly the first time, although I’ll admit with a latin american spanish accent and not a “spain” spanish accent… you gotta pronounce the “z” as a “th” sound… stupid kids…chorizo and cielo tormentoso?I like those…nate

  54. Griffin and Sabine after the books…griffins a stretch for a girl but they sound cool together.

  55. Sugarplum and Fairy(They did love The Nutcracker, right? And I don’t remember the little girl’s name from the ballet.)

  56. Delurking to add: Samantha and Endora (love Agnes Morehead)or Samantha and Tabitha or Samantha and Serena (evil cousin)if you’re at all into “Bewitched”. Thelma and Louise (too obvious?) I knew someone with a cat named Zamfir (master of the pan flute). My current cat is named Kazoo. I had a cat named Boogie and one named Paisley and another named Puck. Franny and Zooey? Cats sometimes name themselves rather quickly. I bet if you wait a day or two, you’ll find names that suit them perfectly.

  57. The best cat names I’ve come across so far as Eleanor Roosevelt and Hilary Clinton

  58. The last two we had were named Merry & Pippin after the hobbits in Lord of the Rings. Of course, they were both boys, but Merry works better for a girl anyway, right?

  59. Bonnie and ClydePeanut and JellyPeanut and bacon (yum!). Ok, this is my favorite.

  60. Indestructo the Barbarous, or Indy for short. It’s a name we gave to a 4 week old female kitten that adopted us in the Marshall Islands. She later had a friend named Oliver or Ollie for short. So, Indy and Ollie?

  61. Someone beat me to the Palin joke. Dang.My dad called my sister and I Frick and Frack. Very warm, I know, but it would be fun to holler, no?I’m not much help. I still can’t get past the idea that you have Mariah Carey’s Luscious. And unopened!? There ya go: Mariah and Carey! (oy)Wishing you all a happy me-ew year!

  62. How about Daisy or Buttercup?Or Lulu/Lola. Daisy and Lulu very cute kitty names! 😀

  63. Okay, well my husband likes the name “Dr. Claw” for a cat and only wishes that he’d thought of it before we named our gray cat Gandalf. Relatedly, I find “Clawdia” and “Cat Face” amusing. Because what is the point of having pets (or kids) unless you find them entertaining. My husband also suggested “Earl” and “Grey” if you are tea drinkers. I suggest “Pearl” and “Grey” if you are not.I’ve been watching the box set of “My So-Called Life” so I like names from that right now: Catalano, Chase, Rickie, Angela.I can’t wait to hear what you choose

  64. I know the names are going to end up being Serrano and I don’t know, Bocco after Bocconcini so I am not offering up any names 😉 But I had to tell you I giggled when I saw one of your commenters suggest EMANON and then explain what it meant. Do you remember Emanon? Is it still there? *sigh* The thoughts I have as we swiftly kick 2008 in the rear.

  65. I had cats named “Catcher” and “Rye” when I was little, but I also had one called “Catchi the Choo Choo Train,” so judge my naming abilities as you will…

  66. I know I have a stupid sense of humor, but I almost names my cat Sister Mary Whiskers and I have regressed my decision not to ever since. My vote would be for Sister Mary Whiskers and Mrs. Marbles.

  67. Trouble & Mischief…those were the names of my two cats..the best cats in the world..Trouble passed at the age of 16 and Mischief when he was 14..funny how I got them a few years apart, and didn't really want either one when they came to me as teeny kittens..they turned out to be the greatest gifts..aside from my children of course.

  68. Alligator and Duckling (Alli or Gator and Duck, for short).Eeyore and Pooh.Small and Peg.(all taken from randomly flipping through the Tao of Pooh, which was sitting next to my computer when I read this post).

  69. We have sister cats: Daisy and Violet. They get called Mae-Mae (it started out as Daisy Mae, then Mae-Mae, then my friend told me that Mae-Mae is “little sister” in Chinese). Vi-Vi is for Violet, but she is the more reclusive sister. The next time we get a cat, I think we’re naming it Pickles, after the cat in the book The Fire Cat. Most of my other cat names are male. My husband named his old cat after bicycle components (Campy short for Campagnolo).Since I love to hear my kids say Pickles, my suggesstions are:Pickles and Puss.

  70. ¿Don Jamón y Puerquito? No… ¡Jamón y Cajál! “Tres cosas me tienen presode amores el corazón,la bella Liz, el jamóny berenjenas con queso.”8(:)D

  71. Sorry to tell you that you will end up calling them whatever Thalia wants. I know of what I speak. Two of our cats are called Mary and Spencer. My three year old named them and there was no changing his mind.

  72. I just read through and saw someone said Thelma and Louise. My two oldest cats are called that. They are two big fiesty tabbies.

  73. Is it too late to suggest? I have read through all the suggestions, and have two MORE (because you can never have enough)…1. Dog and Puppy (just for the fun of it)OR2. Gato & Le Chat (I'm all about diversity). 🙂

  74. OrWhinny and PoohIf Stinky Pooh doesn’t work for you.You could officially call themWinifred and Lady McPoohshire.or notHappy New Year!

  75. I know you said they don’t have to go together, but I swear if I ever got two cats at the same time I would name them:Benson and StablerWe have a cat named Tesla now, and I desperately wanted to name our second cat Edison.Sometimes letting the kids name the cat is not so bad, when I was Thalia’s age my brother and I had cats named Cinnamon and Yoyo.

  76. They’re girl kitties? One can be Rose and the other Daisy, of course! Unless you’d prefer Oatmeal and Honey, Peanut and Buttercup (wait, those are two of my rabbits), or Eartha and Kitty.

  77. Oh I think I have to second that Eartha and Kitty.Purrfect!

  78. am i too late to the party? delurking to add some of my kitty name favs… we had a Bonnie and Clyde at one time. now we have a Rigby (nicknamed Riggy-Tiggy-Tavi). (we also have dogs Freya, Oberon and Lars in case anyone’s wondering)for cats i’ve always liked Persephone, Penelope, Pickles, Artemis, Keebler, Nevyn, Severin, Seven, Wimple, Kitter-cat, Sneakers, Senor(ita) Meow Meow… there’s more but you seem to have a good list going. =)

  79. How about You’re Crazy and the other one You’re Crazier. Nicknames Yo and yoyo…..just trying to help. Love and luck, Auntie Fred

  80. Odie and NermalYes, I know. They’re both boys. But I like the idea of old school names and one of them was originally a cat. And they sound kiddie too.Or possibly Felix and Vavoom… or Poindexter….Or going on a tangent here…. Vex and Minx? Those are more girly, short, and sweet.

  81. Vodka and Tequilla? (Vodka is my dog’s name, but I was 18 when I named her..).

  82. I swear, I was thinking of names in my sleep.Minx and JinxHex and VexViolet and Daisy (somehow I always tend to think of grey cats as violets – not sure why)Dandy and Daffy? (for dandelion and daffodil)Trixie and TaffyIt’s really hard to come up with appropriate names without seeing them. I always name our pets by seeing what name actually fits them.

  83. Geez…120 comments on this. Wow. So let’s make it 121 shall we?Even though they are girls, you could go for Pete and Repeat. (If you got a 3rd you’d have Threepeat of course.)Or initials are good. Our little cat CJ is really Cup ‘O Joe because she’s so hyper but we just call her CJ. (Our big guy is Harley and if you heard him purr you’d understand why that’s his name.)How about a little lightning and thunder (or relampago and trueno)? And last but not least, just spell CAT. It’s a three syllable word that sort of rhymes with Haiti. You’d have to figure out the other one though. Probably not DOG. Congrats on the new cats. Happy scooping! -Monica

  84. I can’t believe not one person in this huge list of matching names suggested “Smoke” and “Mirror”!Now a few non-matching name suggestions… Moxie Lily (I had a cat named Lily Blue once, inspired by Lily Daw)Abigail WispVelvet TwitchLarkMy current cats are named Intrepid Jake and Mischief Purity (Missy and Jake for short) so you can see I go for the whimsical names. Ooh, Whimsy! That would be a cute name.
